Ethiopian Paraiba tourmaline has been gaining significant attention since August 2026, when it was officially recognized as a new source by both the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the Gübelin Gem Lab.

A defining characteristic of Ethiopian specimens is their unique chemical composition; some contain copper levels comparable to those from Brazil, and they also tend to have relatively high concentrations of vanadium (V), gallium (Ga), and lead (Pb). The vanadium content, in particular, serves as a crucial indicator for distinguishing these stones from those known to come from Brazil, Nigeria, and Mozambique.
