March birthstone

The birthstones for March are aquamarine , coral , bloodstone , and iolite .

Aquamarine is a type of beryl, the same mineral as emerald, and is the name given to blue beryl. It is said to have been named after the Latin word for "sea water," and there are many legends associated with the sea. It is often mined in relatively large crystals, so it can be enjoyed as a large loose stone or jewelry.

Coral is a gemstone born from a living organism called a coral reef worm that lives in the sea. It comes in a variety of colors, including red, pink, and white, but the most highly valued is the deep red variety known as blood red coral . Blood red coral is also famous for being found in the seas off Japan.

Bloodstone is a type of jasper that has red spots on a green background.
There are many anecdotes about how it has been prized as a mystical stone around the world since ancient times, and it is said to have been used as a hemostatic agent. Some stones have red spots that look like eyes.

Iolite refers to the deep blue to violet variety of cordierite. It is also known for its strong pleochroism, which means the color changes depending on the angle. When light is shone on it, the inclusions inside sparkle and have the aventurine effect, and are popular, commonly known as iolite sunstone .
