Paraiba tourmaline is captivating for its exquisite color, distinct from both the deep blue of the sea and the blue of the sky. In Japan, its definition is established as "a copper-bearing tourmaline ranging from blue to green (regardless of origin)." It is a gemstone that continues to enjoy enduring popularity. This is a piece of rough Paraiba tourmaline from the São José da Batalha mine (Old Mine) in Paraíba, Brazil. Known as the birthplace of Paraiba tourmaline, this historical mine produced this mineral specimen still attached to its host rock. From the white to translucent host rock, a vibrant blue-green columnar crystal—characteristic of Paraiba tourmaline—extends outward. The vertical striations unique to tourmaline are visible on the crystal surface, allowing you to observe the natural form of the stone as it is found in the rough.
