While typical moonstone and rainbow moonstone are appreciated for the surface schiller effect, the appeal of those from Malawi lies in how the rainbow light appears to be suspended inside the stone. This rainbow effect is caused by light interference due to slight distortions or layered structures within the crystal, creating an impressive appearance with banded brilliance that spreads in a fixed direction. The contrast between its transparency and rainbow colors is beautiful, and those with particularly vivid coloration are rare with limited production.
