While common moonstone and rainbow moonstone are appreciated for the Schiller effect on their surface, the appeal of the Malawi variety lies in the appearance of rainbow light trapped deep within the stone. This iridescence is created by the interference of light caused by slight distortions or layer structures inside the crystal, creating an impressive banded glow that extends in a uniform direction. The contrast between its transparency and the rainbow colors is beautiful, and stones with particularly vivid color are rare with limited production.
