Ethiopian sunstone, like Oregon sunstone, is a variety of sunstone that contains natural copper and was discovered in Ethiopia in 2015. While the stone type itself was already known, those from Ethiopia are a relatively new variety of sunstone. Although there are slight differences in composition between Ethiopian and Oregon sunstones, their crystal structures—including the natural copper content—are similar, making it difficult to distinguish their origin based on appearance alone. In particular, because "Oregon sunstone" has become an established brand name, this copper-bearing sunstone from Ethiopia is gaining attention under the new origin-based name "Ethiopian sunstone."
