Ethiopian sunstone, like Oregon sunstone, is a natural copper-bearing sunstone; it is a stone from a new locality discovered in Ethiopia in 2015. Although the mineral species itself was already known, sunstones from Ethiopia are relatively new. While there are slight differences in composition between Ethiopian and Oregon sunstones, the crystal structure of the natural copper they contain is similar, making it difficult to distinguish their origin based on appearance alone. In particular, since the name "Oregon sunstone" is well-established as a brand, this copper-bearing sunstone from Ethiopia is attracting attention under the new locality name, "Ethiopian sunstone."
