Paraiba tourmaline is captivating for its exquisite color, distinct from both the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky. In Japan, it is defined as "a copper-bearing tourmaline with colors ranging from blue to green (regardless of origin)." It is a gemstone that continues to enjoy enduring popularity. This is a piece of rough Paraiba tourmaline from the São José da Batalha mine (Old Mine) in Paraíba, Brazil. Known as the birthplace of Paraiba tourmaline, São José da Batalha is where this specimen, still attached to its host rock, was mined. From the white to translucent host rock, a vibrant blue-green columnar crystal—quintessential to Paraiba tourmaline—extends outward. The characteristic longitudinal striations of tourmaline are visible on the crystal's surface, allowing for close observation of its natural, raw form.
