While common moonstones and rainbow moonstones are admired for the adularescence on their surface, Malawian moonstones are appealing because the iridescent light appears to penetrate deep within the crystal. This iridescence is created by the interference of light due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, and the band-like brilliance that spreads in a certain direction creates an impressive appearance. The contrast between transparency and iridescence is beautiful, and those with particularly good color are rare due to limited production.
