Sugilite from South Africa, 0.786ct loose stone

Sugilite, also known as cedar stone in Japanese, is originally tiny pale yellow-brown crystals, but it became famous when Dr. Kenichi Sugi and Masanori Hisatsuna of Kyushu University discovered a purple variety of sugilite. While small amounts of this gemstone are mined domestically, larger crystals are primarily mined from the Weissel mine in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. This gemstone has a beautiful, indescribable deep purple color. This is a cabochon-cut sugilite that just arrived from Tucson, USA.
