The famous stone sapphire is a well-known gemstone. It is made of the same mineral corundum as ruby, but all corundum other than red is called sapphire. Sapphire is the second hardest gemstone after diamond with a hardness of 9, and is tough, stable, and easy to care for. This is a rare unheated sapphire from Sri Lanka.
