Sugilite, also known as cedar stone in Japanese, is originally tiny pale yellow-brown crystals, but it became famous when Dr. Kenichi Sugi and Masanori Hisatsuna of Kyushu University discovered a purple variety of sugilite. While small amounts of this gemstone are mined in Japan, larger crystals are primarily mined from the Weissel mine in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. This gem has a beautiful, indescribable deep purple color. This is a South African sugilite polished into a cabochon. Although it is small, averaging 0.1 carat, you can enjoy the characteristic color of sugilite.
