A type of feldspar mined in Malawi, southeastern Africa. It is characterized by fine, rainbow-colored streaks of light appearing within its transparent crystal. While typical moonstone and rainbow moonstone are enjoyed for their surface sheen, the charm of the Malawi variety lies in the appearance of rainbow light trapped within the stone. This iridescence is created by the interference of light due to slight distortions and layer structures inside the crystal, creating an impressive effect with band-like radiance extending in a constant direction. The contrast between its transparency and the rainbow colors is beautiful, and stones with particularly vivid color are rare with limited production.
