While typical moonstones and rainbow moonstones are enjoyed for their surface sheen, the appeal of those from Malawi lies in the way the rainbow light appears to be embedded deep within the stone. This rainbow effect is created by the interference of light caused by slight distortions or layered structures inside the crystal, creating an impressive, banded brilliance that spreads in a fixed direction. The contrast between its transparency and rainbow colors is beautiful, and stones with particularly vivid coloration are rare and limited in production.
