A type of feldspar found in Malawi, Southeast Africa. It is characterized by fine, rainbow-colored streaks of light appearing within a translucent crystal. While common moonstones and rainbow moonstones are admired for the schiller effect on their surface, Malawi moonstones are appealing because the rainbow light appears to be embedded within them. This rainbow color is created by the interference of light due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, and the impressive, band-like luster extending in a certain direction creates a striking appearance.
