A type of feldspar found in Malawi, Southeast Africa. It is characterized by fine, iridescent streaks of light appearing within a translucent crystal. While common moonstone and rainbow moonstone are admired for the adularescence on their surface, Malawian moonstone is attractive for the way the iridescent light appears to be embedded within the crystal. This iridescence is created by the interference of light due to slight distortions or layered structures within the crystal, and the band-like brilliance that spreads in one direction creates an impressive appearance. The contrast between translucence and iridescence is beautiful, and those with particularly good color are rare due to limited production.
