A type of feldspar produced in Malawi, Southeast Africa. It is characterized by fine, rainbow-colored light appearing in streaks within the translucent crystals. While typical moonstone and rainbow moonstone are admired for their surface schiller, Malawi-produced moonstone is attractive because the rainbow-colored light appears to penetrate deep inside the crystal. This rainbow color is caused by the interference of light due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, creating an impressive appearance with band-like luminescence that spreads in a certain direction. The contrast between translucency and rainbow colors is beautiful, and those with particularly good coloration are rare and limited in production.
