While common moonstone and rainbow moonstone are admired for their surface schiller, Malawian moonstone is appealing for the way the iridescent light seems to penetrate the interior. This iridescence is created by the interference of light due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, and the band-like glow extending in a certain direction creates an impressive appearance.
