A type of feldspar produced in Malawi, Southeast Africa. It is characterized by fine, rainbow-colored streaks of light appearing within a translucent crystal. While general moonstones and rainbow moonstones are enjoyed for the schiller on their surface, the appeal of Malawian moonstones lies in the way the rainbow-colored light appears to penetrate deep within the crystal. This rainbow color is created by the interference of light due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, and the band-like brilliance that spreads in a certain direction creates an impressive appearance. The contrast between its translucency and rainbow colors is beautiful, and those with particularly good coloration are rare due to limited production.
