2.503 ct Loose Emerald with Pyrite from Colombia

This is a pyrite-in-emerald from the Chivor Mine in Colombia. The Chivor Mine is known for producing beautiful, bluish emeralds. This particular loose stone features pyrite within the emerald. The addition of metallic-lustre pyrite to the emerald offers a different aesthetic from a plain emerald, showcasing the unique character of the mineral.
Pyrite-in-emerald such as this is known not only for its interesting appearance but also for the difficulty of its polishing. This is because emerald and pyrite have different hardnesses, with emerald being harder, so in conventional polishing, the pyrite portion tends to recede. For this reason, such stones are carefully cut over time by local craftsmen in Colombia. Because different minerals coexist within a single stone, high skill and meticulousness are required for the finishing.
