A type of feldspar produced in Malawi, southeastern Africa. It is characterized by fine, rainbow-colored streaks of light appearing within a translucent crystal. While common moonstones and rainbow moonstones are enjoyed for the schiller on their surface, Malawian moonstones are attractive for the way the rainbow light appears to penetrate deep inside. This iridescence is caused by light interference from slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, and the impressive belt-like glow that spreads in a certain direction creates a distinctive appearance. The contrast between translucence and iridescence is beautiful, and those with particularly good color development are rare due to limited production.
