While common moonstones and rainbow moonstones are admired for the schiller on their surface, Malawian specimens are captivating because the iridescent light appears to penetrate deep inside the crystal. This iridescence is caused by light interference due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, creating an impressive appearance with band-like streaks of light that spread in a certain direction. The contrast between the transparency and the iridescence is beautiful, and those with particularly good color are rare due to limited production.
