A type of feldspar produced in Malawi, southeastern Africa. It is characterized by fine, rainbow-colored streaks of light appearing within a translucent crystal. While common moonstones and rainbow moonstones showcase adularescence on their surface, the appeal of Malawian moonstones lies in the way the rainbow light appears to penetrate deep inside the crystal. This rainbow color is created by light interference due to slight distortions and layered structures within the crystal, and the band-like glow that spreads in a certain direction creates an impressive appearance. The contrast between transparency and rainbow colors is beautiful, and those with particularly good coloration are rare due to limited production.
