Montana sapphire began when Dr. J.F. Kunz, then vice president of Tiffany & Co., identified a blue rough stone found in Yogo Gulch, Montana, as a sapphire. There are several deposits, but this particular one comes from Yogo, considered the birthplace of Montana sapphires. Yogo primarily produces blue to violet sapphires. As the mine is now closed, these stones are rare with no new output. An identification report with origin from the Japan Germany Gemmological Laboratory is included.
