Sugilite, also known as Sugiishi in Japanese, was originally a minute, pale yellowish-brown crystal. However, it became famous when Dr. Kenichi Sugi and Mr. Masanori Hisatsuna of Kyushu University discovered a purple variety of sugilite. Although small quantities of this gemstone can be found in Japan, larger crystals are primarily mined in the Wessel Mine in the Kalahari Desert, South Africa. It is a beautiful gemstone with an indescribably deep purple color.
