This is synthetic rutile, which appeared on the market in the late 1940s as a diamond substitute. With a low hardness of 6 and stronger dispersion than diamond (it sparkles more than diamond), it was only used for a short period as a substitute. This is a synthetic rutile, octagonal cut by Sri Lankan cutter Sanje.
