Synthetic rutile was introduced to the market in the late 1940s as a diamond substitute. Its low hardness of 6 and stronger dispersion than diamond (making it more brilliant) meant that it was only used as a diamond substitute for a short period of time.
This is a highly transparent synthetic rutile cut in a pear shape.
