This amethyst was mined at the Cachoeira mine in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, over a short four-year period from 2000 to 2004. Cachoeira amethyst is known for its vivid, deep purple color and is also called "color-shift amethyst" because it turns reddish-purple under warm lighting. It was originally discovered during development work aimed at finding the rare metal tantalum. When it was first brought to Japan, its appearance was so stunning—and its properties so similar to those seen in infrared absorption—that it was even suspected of being synthetic. Cachoeira Mine
