Montana sapphires began when Dr. J.F. Kunz, a vice president of Tiffany & Co., proved that blue rough stones found in Yogo Valley, Montana, were sapphires. There are several deposits, and although the characteristics vary from place to place, they are generally characterized by their high transparency and the fact that many fancy colors are produced.
