Sapphire is a well-known stone. It is made from the same mineral as ruby, corundum, but all corundum other than red is called sapphire, so it comes in a variety of colors. With a hardness of 9, sapphire is the second hardest gemstone after diamond. Its high hardness, toughness, and stability make it easy to handle.
