◇What is Chelsea Color Filter◇

The Chelsea color filter is a gem identification device that allows deep red and yellow-green wavelengths to pass through.

Even gemstones that appear to be the same color may appear to be a different color when viewed through a filter, and are used as an aid when purchasing and identifying gemstones.

Originally developed to identify emeralds, it has been used primarily to distinguish between green stones, but it is now also used to distinguish between red and blue colored stones. *Not compatible with all colored stones.

For example, emeralds and rubies, which are known to contain chromium, appear red when viewed through a Chelsea color filter.

However, the color and brightness may change depending on the amount of chromium or the content of other trace elements, so it may be difficult to tell.

Also, synthetic spinel and glass appear brownish gray or blue.

*Due to the amount and balance of elements contained, individual differences, etc., the color does not necessarily change.
*Chelsea color filters are only used as an auxiliary device for identification, and should not be used alone for identification.
*

Instructions for the Chelsea color filter are also included.

<How to use Chelsea color filter>

Look at the gemstone through a filter under strong lighting such as a penlight. If the jewel is too small to see, you may want to use a magnifying glass.
*Color changes are easier to see with orange lights (incandescent lights).

◇What is a dichroic mirror◇

A dichroic mirror is also a gem identification tool and is used to check pleochroism.

By using a dichroic mirror, it is possible to separate the vibration directions of the two polarized lights transmitted through the stone, which changes the hue seen through the two filters.

This allows us to observe pleochroic colors.

There are two types of dichroic mirrors: calcite dichroic mirrors and London dichroic mirrors.

Calcite dichroic mirrors are made using the properties of the mineral calcite, and are basically cylindrical in shape.

The London Dichroic Mirror, on the other hand, looks similar to a magnifying glass and can be folded into a compact size. It is often used in conjunction with a plate light, etc., to make it easier to see the difference in color. Plate lights are sold separately.

This time we will be sending you a London dichroic mirror.

* The instruction manual for the London dichroic mirror is also included.

<How to use the London dichroic mirror>
*Transmitted light is required to confirm pleochroism.

1. Place the gemstone on top of a plate light, etc., and view the gemstone from above through a dichroic mirror.

2. The dichroism of a gemstone can be confirmed by viewing it from a specific direction. You need to observe it from all angles, so place the gemstone at different angles and move the dichroic mirror up and down to observe it.
