emerald

Emerald is the birthstone of May. It is a type of beryl, the same mineral as aquamarine, and is a green gemstone. It is also known as the stone that Cleopatra once loved, and many anecdotes remain. It is characterized by its brittle nature with many scratches and inclusions, so much so that there is a saying that ``There are fewer emeralds without scratches than people with no defects.''
