May birthstone
The birthstone for May is emerald / jade .
Emerald is a type of beryl, the same mineral as aquamarine, and is the name given to beryl, which contains chromium and has a green color. One of the characteristics is that many of them have scratches and inclusions inside. The most famous and high-quality production area is Colombia. The emerald cut is said to have originated from Colombian emeralds.
Jade is also a gemstone with an impressive green color, but it actually comes in a wide variety of colors, including purple, orange, and white. It is also famous for being mined in Japan, mainly in Niigata and Toyama prefectures, and has been selected as Japan's national stone. Highly transparent green jade called ``Roukan'' is the most valuable.
